Last week Hobie was sick, and Mama was in the house. Thing is, only Molly knew that Hobie was sick. So she spent a while running back and forth between Hobie and Mama, evidently trying to let her know that something was wrong. Good dog, Molly.

Today brought us another dose of it: Hobie had evidently had a stroke or something — he was quite debilitated. On her way out to work, Mrs noticed Molly running back and forth between her and Hobie, again letting us know something was wrong.

In Molly’s ten months with us, the dogs’ roles have changed a bit. At first, it was Hobie’s job to guide, teach, and protect Molly. In recent weeks it’s been hers to keep an eye on him.

Good job, Molly.

I was out of town for three days this week, and Hobie was at the vet’s for a very thorough checkup. Some of Mrs’ friends came over to the house for a few minutes while I was away. I’m told that Molly very clearly made her presence known, and let it be known that she was on guard. She wasn’t aggressive about it, but she clearly wanted the friends to know that she knew they were there.
Good job, Molly, good job.

Molly was supposed to be Paw’s dog. Poor old Blackjack was going blind and appeared as though he had little time left. Aunt Mae picked up a black Lab puppy, soon to be known as Molly, to take Blackjack’s place.

When Paw was in the nursing home, he loved to hear about Molly. Cat offered to give Molly back to Paw when he left the nursing home. Paw refused, perhaps thinking he would not be going back home. He said, “no you keep her. She’ll guard you for life.”

This weekend there has been a stray black dog cruising around our neighborhood. It’s a beautiful dog, black with a white bib and HUGE ears. We began to call him Jackson (for no real reason other than it sounded good). Hobie’s very protective, and would bark when Jackson would come too close to the fence. Hobie is like that, and treats all visiting dogs that way.

Molly has picked up on this protectiveness, and we got to watch her put it into practice yesterday. As Jackson neared the fence, Hobie ran toward him, barking and attempting to run him away. Molly ran back and forth between Hobie and Cat, “herding” Cat away from Jackson. She would push Cat toward the house, and then run toward Hobie, apparently trying to check with him that she was doing the right thing. Once Cat was back in the house, Molly stood in front of the door, not allowing her to go back outside until Hobie had run Jackson away.

She’s gonna be a good dog.
